Funders in the Wellington region
Local council funding
All 5 councils in the Wellington region offer funding to their communities for a wide range of purposes.
Free online searches for funders
You can get free access to online funding searches if you:
- have a Wellington, Upper Hutt, Porirua or Kapiti Coast library card, or
- are a student at a tertiary institution.
Searching for funds
Generosity NZ helps you research:
- funding options for community groups
- awards, scholarships and grants for individuals
- ways to connect business and community groups.
You may be able to get free access to Generosity NZ through your local library, otherwise you need to subscribe to use this service.
The Community Organisations Grants Scheme (COGS) is a government fund that provides grants to non-profit community organisations that deliver community-based social services.
The Department of Conservation Community Fund provides annual funding to encourage and inspire community-led conservation.

Volunteer Wellington provides professional development workshops on topics of interest to community groups.
Boosted School of Crowdfunding offers blogs and tips to help you use crowdfunding campaigns to raise money.
Evaluation and strategic planning
What Works is a website that brings together tools, resources, case studies and other methods to help you gather good evidence about the value of the work your group is doing. This data can be used in funding applications and future planning.
NZ Navigator is an online self-assessment tool which helps identify your organisation’s strengths and weaknesses. This is a great way to set up a collaborative online assessment for your members, volunteers or trust.
Marketing and publicity
The Community Comms Collective is a Wellington-based group of experienced communications professionals who want to give back to their community. You can request volunteer help or use the resources on their website to give your comms a boost.

Techsoup provides technology advice and products for not-for-profits.
CommunityNet Aotearoa is run by the Department of Internal Affairs. It’s an online hub of resources designed to strengthen communities through governance and leadership, evaluation and improving relationships.
Naturespace is a website for groups, individuals and landowners undertaking ecological restoration. It offers events, noticeboards, news and more.
