Before you apply, please check that you meet our funding criteria for the type of grant you wish to apply for. Please check Criteria for All Applications in addition to the specific Quick Response, Community Grants, or LIFT Grants criteria.

Please note: it’s unusual for Wellington Community Trust to meet the full cost of your project.

If, after checking what we do and do not fund, you are unsure if you are eligible to apply, please ring us at 04 499-7966 to discuss your project.

Criteria for All Applications

In order to apply for one of our grants, please ensure:

  • Your activities take place within the Wellington region, which for us includes:
    • Kāpiti Coast including Ōtaki
    • Porirua
    • The Hutt Valley
    • Wellington

  • Your group is an incorporated society or a registered charitable trust.
  • Your project starts after our payment date for the round in which you apply
  • The project starts within 12 months of your receiving the funding

Community Grants and Quick Response Grants

In addition to meeting our general criteria, applications to Community Grants and Quick Response grants must also ensure:

  • You are not applying for a Quick Response grant and a Community Grant at the same time.
  • You have not applied to us for a Quick Response or Community Grant within the current financial year (April 1-March 31)
  • You are not already receiving a Community Grant or a Quick Response grant in the same financial year (April1-March 31)

LIFT Grants

Individual LIFT Grants

Please note: LIFT Grants will give priority to organisations that have less than 12 months’ operating reserves on their balance sheets

In addition to meeting our general criteria, applications to LIFT Individual Grants must also make sure:

  • You are applying for professional development at your current workplace in your current role
  • You must work in the Wellington region even if your organisation is nationally-based
  • Your line manager supports your application
  • Your workplace will provide you with time off to pursue the professional development you are applying for

Organisational LIFT Grants

Please note: LIFT Grants will give priority to organisations that have less than 6 months’ operating reserves on their balance sheets

In addition to meeting our general criteria, applications to LIFT Organisational Grants must also make sure:

You are applying to support your organisation to develop its capability at an organisational level. Examples could include developing an organisational strategy; developing a response to an issue; developing governance skills; and developing whole-of-organisation training.

Things we do not fund: General

  • Commercial ventures (We do fund social enterprise)
  • Contribution to a debt reduction
  • Promotion of a religious or political message (We do fund faith-based community services)
  • Individuals, including scholarships
  • Endowments, capital funds, other trust funds
  • Central or Local government
  • Overseas travel, either to or from New Zealand
  • Feasibility studies or building resource consents

In addition to our general exclusions, within each of our priority areas for Community Grants and Quick Response grants, we do not fund:

People

  • Core healthcare services, including hospitals and GPs
  • Schools: including universities, child care centres & kindergartens
  • Single-issue health organisations

Places

  • [Building construction
  • Construction or renovation of school halls, gymnasiums, playgrounds, or swimming pools
  • Purchase of buildings

Participation

  • Operating costs for sports clubs: this includes sport equipment, coaches’ salaries, uniforms, and prizes/trophies
  • Council-maintained sports fields

For Individual LIFT Grants, we do not fund:

  • Backfilling a role while a staff member is undertaking professional development
  • Professional development that has already occurred
  • Individuals who have already successfully applied to a LIFT grant in the past financial year (April 1-March 31)
  • funds will only be paid to the organisations employing the individual who applies.  No funds will be directly to individuals or to the institutions they will undertake their professional development with.
  • Organisations that have received an organisational LIFT grant in the current financial year (April 1-March 31)

For Organisational LIFT Grants, we do not fund:

  • Mediation or conflict resolution with an organisation
  • Organisations that have received an organisational LIFT grant in the current financial year (April 1-March 31)
